Since for some time now, I haven’t got a thing to do and am idle in the truest sense of the term , my mind has got its fair chance of wondering around and is abuzz with all sorts of weird ideas . I have given myself the independence to think about anything and everything under the sun.
So today is viswakarma puja , the puja of the engineer god. That makes me think aren’t god and science two totally different things. I mean they both try to explain stuff like creation of the universe in totally different ways. One resorts to mysterious powers to explain it while the other tries to explain it in terms of existing physical phenomenon. And technology itself is a child of the sciences focusing mainly on its application side . So, the million dollar question is How come we have a god of technology? Strange isn’t it? Is it an effort to explain the explainable using inexplicable or is it the reverse ? Kinda confusing!!!
Since I find confusions tiring, I move on to the next topic. I decide to read the newspaper. There is this front-page article on Shashi Tharoor and what he posted on Twitter. What I learn from the newspaper is that someone, who was actually a journalist had left a tweet for Tharoor saying :”tell us minister, next time u travel to Kerala, will it be cattle class?” and in reply Tharoor had posted “absolutely, in cattle class out of solidarity with our holy cows”. This little joke on his part had left the whole party twitching because they wondered “was Tharoor taking a potshot at Sonia Gandhi” or “was he throwing the tweet at Rahul Gandhi”[said the newspaper].What do we call this? If u ask me, I would say it’s simply outrageous. All this time I thought that the 1st page was about all the important news in the country [how silly of me!!!] and never guessed it included following ministers and their comments on social network. And we talk about responsible journalism, right?
So, I dump the newspaper and move on. I stand in the balcony and look up to see kites flying in the sky. Kites of various shapes and sizes play hide and seek with the clouds. It’s a joy to watch. Suddenly I see a kite swishing down through the air. It’s a yellow kite with a red tail. A band of boys go running towards it, wind in their hair and eyes in the sky. One of them catches it and emerges with a triumphant smile on his face. Others follow him with a little disappointment showing on their faces. It is then that they spot a second kite coming down and forgetting everything they start running again. I feel that this running after a kite somehow symbolizes the journey of life. We run after a goal, some reach it and some don’t. But for both groups there is another new goal to achieve [or another new kite to catchJ] ,newer heights to scale with little time for despair in between. Wow!!Am impressed with my own philosophy.
Then I come into my room and remember that the next day is MAHALAYA . ie . the day that marks that DURGAPUJA is just 7days away. This day is marked by a special program on RADIO and TV called “Debi abahon” .It is basically welcoming of the mother goddess from her holy abode to earth through Vedic chants. There is this recital of it by BIRENRAKRISHNA BHADRA that is telecast early morning on radio on this day. PUJO for many Bengalis is incomplete without it. It really makes one feel the arrival of something divine. The strange thing about it is that this recital heard at any other time of the day any other time of the year doesn’t produce the effect that it produces on that particular day. I am myself one of those sleepyheads who fails to keep her eyes open after a few slokas and so I got myself a cassette of the whole thing. But it didn’t have any such effects when played at other times. You may well attribute it to my typical Bengali sentiments, but I can’t and neither do I want to change it.
Filled with a deep sense of pride at being a BENGALI, I switch on the computer and start listening to music. And guess what makes me shake my head~”it’s my life” by BON Jovi. What do u call that!!!
Waiting for your comments. Do tell me what do u really think of it?

If I can borrow from Tharoor, its called the "agglomerative bengali" (one of his tweets talk about an agglomerative Indian which generated certain kind of hoopla) :P
btw, that distinction between religion and science- well if we go back to history, much before renaissance when church used to fund all scientific research- we may well come to the conclusion that what generated afterwards was the politics of one upmanship to further one's power. :-)
I think your random thoughts are systematically expressed. Nice...
Hope the gap between Mahalaya and Durga puja does not become random..
@soumyajitda...

the kite part is the best part of all.

Durgapuja......
More than a festival...its a feeling..
Even i remember the days(Until 2007, after which we moved to our own house leaving our Company alloted Bungalow), wen I used to count each second between Mahalaya n Durgapuja..
And those seven days were the most tiring days for my muscles n the famous music player of my Gym ..
I used to spend more than my usual time there pumping iron and charging up to the tunes of "It's my life"..
well as like most young Salmans it wasn't an urge to show "Doley-Sholeys" in my skin fit tees..
rather to show each part of my body while carrying the "Dola" to bring "MAA", wearing a new "Dhoti" and a vest and leading the Big group with 20 "Dhaks" around...
It was all feelings...
Feeling the deep rooted bengali sentiments..
Thanx Dear..
U made me nostalgic..
From saikat,
Comment No.1= Change your newspaper from Anandabazar or Telegraph to The Hindu, the only All India Newspaper.
Now, about your writing, it really portrays the real state of your mind. Actually, we have two states of mind, one which we express outside and another which is only open to us. So, at first, let me explain your mental state. Your disturbed mind has plenty of time to think everything surrounding you. You are trying to analyze everything in a logical tone.
Now, about technology and GOD! Whether “Biswakarma” is an explanation of technology by God, or reverse? Answer is both. Whenever, we are trying for any tough job (like working in the field of innovation of scientific knowledge), we need some kind of mental strength. As almost all people are alone in this world, they try to rely on a self-prepared image i.e. so called GOD. On the other hand, those priests who are trying to be in the top of society using weakness of common people, are also trying to explain everything in this world in the light of GOD, and they try to put themselves as the only medium between GOD and common people by virtue of being a “Brahmin”. So, is it not true from both points of view? GOD (or those priests) needs to define science under HIS jurisdiction to control people. On the other hand, People need concept of some super-natural power behind them to motivate themselves in their work. So, What is the moral of the story? Except those few like me (who absorbs inspirations from their real world or their own relations or own family and don’t believe on GOD so much), science and GOD are required to fulfill the purpose of each other. Only, it should be used after proper filtration.
About your kites, Do you ever fly a kite in the sky? It is my favorite hobby. But, unfortunately, after coming to salt lake I found that boys/girls of salt lake are not familiar with kites. Though I myself alone played kites in the sky in previous years, but, this year I decide not to play kites. Why? I don’t like to put my kite alone in the sky. What is the benefit of playing kites without the enjoyment of competition and that “bhokatta”? So, today, I spend a sorrowful day without touching any kite. However, as per me, playing kites in the sky (i.e. controlling an object far away in the sky with a chord by my little push of finger) is more enjoyable than capturing a kite. So, here, as per you, it is a nice experience to tackle a Goal far away from it than capturing it (the hand on example is TCS. And I am sure, the aim for which I am trying for at present, will also be bitter when I shall reach at that aim).
And about our Bangali sentiment, it is quite natural. As after born, we first talk the word “MA”, not the word “mother”. So, Bangla is our MOTHER-tounge, the term containing the word MA, the single word in this world, which is our only place of relief without any catering charge.
I think, I write enough!! For the first time I am writing in any blog. So, can’t control the size. However, what do you think, Should I start my own blog?
Bye. Have a nice day.
nice example what a wondering mind can do.....!!!various aspects of life and mindset has been portrayed....GOOD WRITING...carry on...will be wating for ur next one...
Cool..... itz nt so easy to bring back random thoughts to ur memory and xpress those so nicely. gr8 job........ awaiting more of ur thoughtz.....
guys ... i know i am the smallest kid on he block here , but dudes please cut her some slack .. will ya ??
this is just an agglomeration of random thoughts .. its L-A-B-E-L-L-E-D so ... and it isnt her theological thesis on " the modern bengalee : stuck yet moving" ... so be a bit realistic when approaching this comment section.
as for u deeh , the last part .. u rocking to ' its my life" ...i can explain it in two ways. first , well .. wat i can say is that its music after all ... which bridges evrything .. boundaries , barriers .. blah blah
OR , i can just say that u love that song ... period.
You've captured the events in a non-judgemental manner, and in very simple thoughts! The kites analogy is very apt, though I remember feeling the pangs of jealosy when I couldn't catch one myself. It depends on the individual whether the result drives him to go ahead, or just accept his defeat (or success).
I must say there is a strong correlation in your liking Bon Jovi and Vedic chants with equal ease, and this is a bengali trait from whatever personal experiences I have had. It probably speaks of an evolved aesthetic sense about music found in a Bengali upbringing!
Well written!
